The Daring Prison Break: Escape From Alcatraz

Why I Chose This Documentary

I chose to watch the documentary Escape From Alcatraz because I have always been curious about real-life mysteries and unsolved cases. This story felt exciting to me because it is not just a normal prison escape — it is one of the most famous escapes in history. I wanted to understand how three men could plan something so daring inside the most secure prison of that time. This documentary also connects to my interest in historical mysteries, so I felt it would be a good topic for my blog.

Introduction to Alcatraz Prison

Alcatraz was known as the toughest and most secure prison in the United States. It was built on an island surrounded by cold, strong ocean currents, making escape almost impossible. Dangerous criminals were kept there because the authorities believed no one could ever break out. The documentary explains how life inside Alcatraz was strict, harsh, and heavily controlled, which made the escape even more surprising.

The Escape Plan Begins

The documentary shows how three inmates — Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, John and Clarence — slowly formed a plan. They were intelligent, patient, and very determined. They secretly dug tunnels inside their cells using simple tools like spoons. They also created fake heads using soap, paint, and hair so that guards would think they were asleep during night checks. Every small detail was done carefully so that no one would suspect them.

The Great Escape Night

The most exciting part of the documentary is the night of the escape. The men crawled through the holes they made, climbed to the roof, and then reached the shoreline. They built a small raft using raincoats they had stitched together over many months. In the middle of the night, they pushed the raft into the cold water and disappeared into the darkness. Even after a huge search operation, the prisoners were never found.

The Mystery That Remains

The documentary ends by explaining that no one knows for sure what happened to the escapees. Some believe they drowned in the strong currents, while others think they survived and lived secretly. Many clues were found over the years, but nothing was fully proven. This mystery is what makes the story so interesting even today. For me, this documentary shows how determination and intelligence can challenge even the strongest systems, and that is why this escape is still talked about.
